What this site is

Silver Vista is a free, independent, general reference about gardening in Australian conditions. It is published by three individuals from Bendigo, Victoria, and is described in full on the about page. It is an information resource. It is not a nursery, a landscaping business, a consultancy or an advisory service, and it does not sell plants, products or services of any kind.

General information only

Everything on this site is general information. It is not advice for your particular garden, your particular soil, your particular site or your particular plant, and it cannot be, because we cannot see any of those things.

Plant sizes, water needs, soil tolerances, frost tolerances, climate zones and seasonal timing given on this site are general guidance based on average conditions across a broad range. Real outcomes vary considerably with local climate, aspect, soil, drainage, exposure, elevation, plant provenance and season. A plant listed here at a given mature size may finish materially larger or smaller in your garden.

You should verify anything that matters against local sources before acting on it, and you should seek qualified professional advice where a question warrants it. In particular, questions about trees near buildings, footings, retaining walls, drainage works, structural matters, boundaries and services are matters for suitably qualified professionals, not for a general reference.

No warranty as to accuracy

We compile and review the information here carefully, and we correct errors when they are reported. We do not warrant that the content is accurate, complete, current or fit for any particular purpose. Botanical nomenclature changes, plant behaviour varies by region, weed declarations and local regulations change, and any reference of this kind will at times be out of date.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we exclude all liability for any loss or damage, whether direct or indirect, arising from your use of or reliance on this site, including loss of plants, loss of crop, property damage, or costs incurred. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any guarantee, right or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded, including consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law.

Local rules are your responsibility

Watering restrictions, rules about removing established trees including on private land, requirements about planting near boundaries and services, and biosecurity restrictions on moving plants, seed, soil and cuttings between states and regions are all set by bodies other than us, and they change. This site does not state what those rules are and does not attempt to. Confirming what applies to you is your responsibility, and the correct sources are your local council, your water authority, and your state or territory biosecurity service.

Health, safety and chemicals

This site makes no health, medicinal, therapeutic or nutritional claims about any plant, and nothing here should be read as one. We do not cover foraging or the identification of wild plants for eating, and we give no advice about what to do after contact with, or ingestion of, any plant material. If you have a health concern, contact a medical professional; in an emergency call 000.

This site does not cover pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or insecticides, and does not recommend, name or describe the use of any such product. Garden work involves tools, machinery and physical risk; take appropriate precautions and use appropriate protective equipment.

Intellectual property

All text, diagrams, data, code and design on this site are the property of Silver Vista and are protected by copyright. You may read, print and link to pages for your own personal, non-commercial use. You may not reproduce, republish, redistribute, systematically extract or commercially exploit any part of the site without our prior written permission.

The plant dataset in particular represents substantial compilation work. Extracting it, in whole or in part, for use elsewhere is not permitted.

Links to other sites

Where we refer you to an external body — a council, a water authority, a biosecurity service — we do so because that body is the correct source for information we decline to state ourselves. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, their availability or their own terms and privacy practices.

Availability

We make no commitment that this site will be available without interruption or free of error. We may change, suspend, restructure or withdraw any part of it at any time without notice, including removing or amending pages.

We may update these terms from time to time. The current version is always the one published on this page, with its review date at the top. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
